Neurodivergence

Neurodivergence refers to developmental conditions whereby an individual’s brain functions differently from what is known as ‘neurotypical.’ These differences can often be observed in brain imaging and include conditions like autism, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, learning disabilities, and more.
Neurodivergent conditions are invisible disabilities; they result in a wide variety of difficulties and often make it challenging, if not impossible, to fit into a ‘one size fits all’ environment.
I prefer to focus on individuals’ strengths without undermining their struggles. I do not use terms like ‘neuro spicy’ or ‘superheroes,’ as these can oversimplify complex experiences and minimise challenges.
My work primarily focuses on autism, OCD, and ADHD, as these are my experiences, though I also touch upon other neurodivergences.
There is no universal set of symptoms for neurodivergence, as every person is unique. However, to learn more about some neurodivergent conditions, please see the reputable resources below:

Invisible Disabilities

Invisible disabilities refer to conditions that impact and limit daily life and functioning but are not immediately apparent to others. These can coexist alongside neurodivergence, amplifying the barriers someone faces. Examples include fibromyalgia, chronic disease, diabetes, arthritis, autoimmune conditions, epilepsy, long COVID, migraines, multiple sclerosis, cancer, Parkinson’s, menopause, and colitis.
My work often draws on examples from migraines, fibromyalgia, spinal conditions, arthritis, and autoimmune conditions.
